2013 Global Alliance COMM PRIX Awards winner Gas Natural Fenosa gives us insights about its winning academic case study

January 27, 2014

The case study “The Role of the Director of Communications in a Merger” presented by Gas Natural Fenosa and included in the book of case studies published by the Association of Communications Executives (Dircom) and IESE, highlights the essential role played by corporate communications in the merger of Gas Natural and Unión Fenosa. This was a crucial time for the company, in which both internal and external communications became an essential tool for the completion of the merger and key to the future of the company.

The Communication Plan, based on two strategic pillars - transparency and proactivity- was intended to ensure that each audience was provided with the information needed at each phase of the process, in a clear and effective manner. At an internal communication level, the major challenge was to obtain the personal investment of the employees of both organisations, with the same levels of excitement and involvement. The initiatives launched in order to achieve this objective included an interactive platform containing 'capsules of information' on the new company and mechanisms to gauge employee opinions of the merger consolidation process, among others.

This accolade also serves as recognition of the work of the Managing Director of Communications and Chairman's Office, Jordi Garcia Tabernero, in achieving a successful merger, leading to the creation of a leading multi-national company in the gas and electricity sector, with a presence in over 25 countries around the world and almost 20 million customers.
