Academics tackle public relations in times of turbulence
Europe's leading academic congress, EUPRERA, recently held its 2011 conference in Leeds, U.K., where delegates heard thought-provoking and challenging presentations bridging the worlds of public relations practitioners and set against the theme ‘public relations in times of turbulence'.
EUPRERA's annual congress is the biggest public relations education conference in Europe. Global Alliance Chair-elect Professor Anne Gregory chaired the event, hosted by Leeds Metropolitan University. Global Alliance Chair Daniel Tisch also took part, joining the ‘CIPR Panel of Experts' as part of an open question-and-answer session.
Speakers included Michael Murphy, Global CEO of Grayling, Robert Hastings, US Acting Assistant Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs from 2008-2009, and Professor Joep Cornelissen, author and Professor of Corporate Communication at VU University Amsterdam and the University of Leeds.
Other keynote speakers challenging conventional communications thinking included Professor David McKie from the Waikato Management School, New Zealand. He examined how to engage creatively and effectively in tempestuous times, drawing on both complexity theory and variant field integration.
Anne Gregory said: "A fantastic set of keynotes, high-calibre and thought-provoking papers and a great venue made for ‘the best EUPRERA ever' according to many of the delegates. The theme - Public Relations in a Time of Turbulence - seemed particularly apt and prompted much lively discussion on how public relations academics and practitioners are shaping up for the future."
