Excellence in learning and research: EUPRERA’s 9th BA and MA Awards now open and abstracts can be submitted until May 16, 2014
The “EUPRERA’s BA and MA Awards” is the first European competition to award the best bachelor and master thesis of students in public relations and communication studies. They were created in 1999 and the 2014 competition will be the 9th edition of these valuable awards, launched by Jos Willems, past president of EUPRERA.
For several years the best dissertation at both levels has been prized with several benefits, namely the winner's presence (all expenses paid) in that year's EUPRERA Congress (this year in Brussels), their papers published on the EUPRERA website and individual recognition as a PR expert is enhanced. Apart from the individual benefits, the Universities and Colleges of origin are recognized as excellence research units across Europe in our field. The winners not only promote themselves but their work celebrates the excellence and innovation in learning and research that EUPRERA stands for.
Every year the jury (academics from Germany, UK, Bulgaria, Norway, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Portugal) evaluates the entries of candidates from across Europe. Above the competitive side, the awards are as well an interesting indicator of the trends in PR academic research in Europe.
Over time the topics of the winning dissertations were evolving, giving this account of the development of the research agendas of both the candidates and jurors: in 2006 the competition was won by a MA thesis on political communication (Dan O'Boyle / Dublin Institute of Technology) and the BA one was won by a dissertation focusing on PR consultancies (Michelle Boyde / Leeds Metropolitan University); the 2013 edition was won by a MA thesis on reputation management and NGOs, (Grace Omondi/ Hanze University of Applied Sciences/ Leeds Metropolitan University) and the BA one by a dissertation on social media (Liza Tomaszek/ University of the Arts-London College of Communications). We can see there’s an evolution of the scientific concerns and curiosity of candidates, which is influenced by technological evolution and by the conceptual debates taking place.
This is an excellent opportunity both for individual candidates and their universities, to show their abilities, skills and quality. The relevant dates of the competition are as follows
- May 16: deadline for submission of abstracts
- June 13: deadline for submission of summaries, ToC and bibliography
- Mid July: communication of results to all candidates
- September 12: awarding ceremony at the congress
