Global Alliance News from the United Nations

February 8, 2011

In addition to a report on "World Progress Toward the MDGs", the conference presented panel sessions with expert corporate and non-governmental-organization (NGOs) speakers on:

. "Core Business and Value Chain Contributions"

. "Strategic Social Investment and Philanthropy"

. "Advocacy and Public Policy Engagement on Key Issues"

Corporate CSR managers and communications experts from companies including Alcoa, Cisco, Nike and Monsanto joined with executives from Oxfam and Ceres in sharing information on such corporate social responsibility progress around the world.

The conference also received a UNGC report, "A Global Compact for Development" which presented case histories by companies ranging from Sumitomo Chemical Company (Japan), China Mobile Communications Corporation and Sayga Food Industries (Sudan) to Cemex (Mexico), Royal Dutch Shell (Netherlands) and Tetra Pac Group (Sweden).

The meeting was presented by the UNGC's U.S. network, one of dozens of such networks around the world.

The United Nations Global Compact consists of approximately 6200 companies and about 1,000 NGOs around the world. Company members agree to operate their enterprises in concert with UNGC's ten principles clustered in environment, human rights, labor rights and anti-corruption and must file an annual "Communication on Progress" report in connection with those principles.

The Global Alliance has been a registered NGO at the United Nations since 2006.
