The Melbourne Mandate heads out into the world with new translations, webinars and a renewed call to action

April 16, 2013

The first of a series of translations of the Melbourne Mandate are now available, with French and Italian versions now on the blog. The Melbourne Mandate was ratified at the Global Alliance 2012 World PR Forum (WPRF) hosted by the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) in Melbourne.

The Melbourne Mandate gives the public relations industry the opportunity to lead in three crucial areas:

  • The definition of organizational character and values;

  • The building of a culture of listening and engagement — not just centred in the PR department, but dispersed across the organization; and

  • The instilling and demonstration of responsibility in all its dimensions — organizational, societal, personal and professional.

Established through an interactive, transparent process where almost 800 delegates from 29 countries reviewed the Mandate and provided feedback that was integrated into the final document.

Global Alliance Chair Dan Tisch and GA Chair Elect Dr Anne Gregory recently completed a series of webinars discussing the adoption and implementation of the Mandate. Webinars ran in Australia with PRIA, in Canada with the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) and in London with the Chartered Institute for Public Relations (CIPR).

Dan completed the Australian and Canadian webinars in March, whilst Dan and Anne co-hosted the webinar with CIPR London in April. The first was held in Canada at the Montreal Mini Conference and was conducted in both official languages. There was a Melbourne Mandate presentation followed by a discussion forum with a panel of experts.

For PRIA and CIPR, the webinars were conducted online. During the CIPR webinar, Dan and Anne discussed the wealth of opportunities and responsibilities for PR practitioners when operating in a global environment.

Further events are planned throughout 2013 and the call has gone out to member associations encouraging them to undertake translations of the Mandate into local languages.
