Passion and Performance find their place at the Nordic, Baltic and Russian Public Relations Leadership Forum in Helsinki

May 21, 2013

The Nordic, Baltic & Russian PR Leadership Forum takes place in Helsinki this June thanks to a co-operation between Global Alliance and ProCom– The Finnish Association of Communications Professionals.

Ms. Päivi Kärkkäinen, General Director of the Finnish National Opera (FNO), will give the opening keynote and focus on “Passion and performance – Leadership in the International world of Opera and Ballet”. Ms. Päivi Kärkkäinen is responsible for management of operations and administration, budget monitoring, Board liaison, personnel recruitment and employment matters.

Working in an international environment and multicultural community like the Finnish National Opera may pose culture based communication challenges. In order to anticipate these issues, Ms. Päivi Kärkkäinen works to ensure all artists feel part of a broader and international community:

Even though we represent different nationalities, we are, above all a community of artists and creators. This means that despite cultural differences, we are all members of the same ballet and opera “tribe”, and hence speak the same international language. The standards of excellence held by people in this community are very high, and this helps us to face challenges. Also, the processes for creating the performance each evening are very clearly defined, and everyone is aware of them.”

Leadership is another key skill when it comes to managing teams and communities. Ms Päivi Kärkkäinen explains that thanks to a very good conversational culture in the management team and a good internal communication within and across different departments she manages to ensure that artists follow the strategy. “Our mission is clearly defined, and the artists are by nature focused on high-quality results. In the end this means that strategy is breathed into life each night on stage” she claims.

Ms. Päivi Kärkkäinen’s speech takes inspiration from the overall theme of "Communication, people and leadership", which will be the main focus also of the ProCom Day, ProCom's largest annual event.
