The Sociology of Crisis: Social Communications Lessons from the Boston Marathon Attack provided to IPR Research Symposium

Offering lessons from the Boston Marathon attack, disaster sociologist Dr. Jeannette Sutton spoke about the impact of social media during crises at IPR's 2013 Trustees Research Symposium. 

 

"Harvard researchers found that tweets mentioning the explosions began to appear six minutes before public health authorities sent alerts to emergency departments," she said. Social media monitoring enabled hospital staff to better prepare for incoming victims.
