Where next for professional associations? PR world leaders take on the challenges and issues of association management and leadership

December 4, 2012

Challenges and opportunities for public relations and communication associations were discussed at the first Global Alliance Association Leaders’ Workshop in Melbourne.

Association leaders from around the world met to share insights unique to our sector. The two-part workshop also looked at the ways in which associations were meeting leadership and advocacy challenges. PRINZ, the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand talked about lobbying – namely, the Lobbying Disclosure Bill. Sharing experience and the New Zealand context resonated with organisations in countries not afforded the same equal rights and transparent access.

The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) talked about the recently introduced ‘Pathways to the Profession’ CPD model while the PRSA gave a response to ethical issues posed by non-members. Brazil (ABERJE) talked about corporate communications promotion and Spain (DirCom) focused on the CSR function being part of the corporate communications department via its Association DirCom. The  UK’s CIPR and IABC gave a detailed presentation on the response to the Wikipedia conundrum (see the CREWE group on Facebook) and an impressive governance and succession model was shared by the IABC.
